Used Motorcycles: Honda Hornet 600 buyers guide

Price new: £5,199
Engine: l/c 16v inline four, 599cc
Power: 90bhp
Top speed: 140mph
Weight: 179kg

The Honda Hornet may of been replaced by a new more stylish version, but the original 1998-2006 model is still a great bike and a bargain used.

Scratch, tour or commute - the Honda Hornet can do it all. The bullet-proof CBR600f donor engine has been detuned to give enough midrange for town use without losing the top end rush you'd expect from an inline four 600.

Handling is neutral and fun, but avoid pre-2000 models if possible as these feature a smaller 16" front wheel. The suspension is budget but does the job - many owners choose to fit stiffer fork springs and/or heavier oil.

The Hornet features solid Honda build quality, so faults and reliability issues are uncommon. Look for a service history and listen for a rattle from the cam chain tensioner as these can sometimes need replacing.
