Price new: £6595
Engine: 1164cc, 16v, dohc, inline four, l/c
Power: 110bhp
Top speed: 144mph
Weight: 210kg (dry)

Modern retros don't get much cooler than the Kawasaki ZRX1200 - but while the R model with its tiny headlight cowl most effectively conjures up Eddie Lawson memories, for practicality and comfort our money's on the half-faired 'S' model.

This big bruiser packs a 120bhp punch from its silky-smooth 1164cc inline four. The suspension isn't the most refined, so it takes a bit of hustling around - but that's what muscle bikes are all about. That half-fairing means it is at least possible to hang on long enough to get close to its 140mph+ top speed.

The engine's been around for ever, so reliability is good - though the OEM Nippon-Denso alternator is prone to failing leading to battery failure. The quaint reliance on a fuel tap may be too authentically retro for some riders, who might not appreciate the notchy gearbox, often contributing to false neutrals between fourth and fifth.
