Engine: l/c dohc 4v v-twin, 998cc
Power: 100bhp
Top speed: 150mph

Taking the 998cc v-twin from the Mille sportsbike and fitting it into a taller sports-touring chassis is the kind of idea you can't fault. With the lightest of tunes to give slightly more rlexaed power delivery, it could have been a VFR beater. Brilliantly stable and eays to ride, that addictive 60-degree v-twin loping along comfortably or going banzai, it does both the sports and the touring easily and well.

But there is a reason it ddin't actually beat the VFR in the showroom. Mostly it's down to reliability, particularly of the electrics. The dash is the major weak spot, but there are weak spots in the wiring, and jet washing can send the bike haywire, causing misfires or even a refusal to start.

This fear of reliability has hit prices, but if you find a good one (fingers crossed) you'll have a very capable - if odd looking - bike for good money. Luggage was included on later models - don't pay extra for it.
