The long-serving ZZ-R600 may have spent much of its life in the shadows of the ZZ-R1100/1200 and the ZX-6R, but it's a handy and practical biek in its own right. It's now often dismissed as a first big bike or commuter - which is slightly harsh for a bike that's actually pretty damn fast and still handles well enough for most situations.

There's little to worry about with the motor, which is as tough as the proverbial ancient footware. Finish is more likely to be a concern, as it's susceptible to the ravages of a British winter. Always a softly suspended machine, check the shock particularly - higher mile bikes will most likely have no damping left. A replacement shock can cost as little as £250. A fork revalve/oil change can transform the front end.

As with any motorcycle that's acquired the 'good first bike' mantle, look carefully for signs of levers and fairings being damaged by nervous novices dropping the bike.
