Price new: £10,895
Engine: l/c dohc 16v inline four, 1157cc
Power: 148bhp
Top speed: 172mph
Weight: 227kg

When it was first launched, the fuelling of the K1200S got such a panning from the world's press that the release of the bike was delayed while Bavarians in white coats made some rapid adjustments. They re-did it so well the K1200S has been steadily climbing up the RiDER Power ranking ever since, finishing third in the 2008 survey.

It's an incredibly fast, stable (thanks to the Duolever front end) sports tourer that manages to be comfortable, one or two up, and it's even pretty economical, which gives a decent tank range.

There were quality issues with early models, particularly affecting the paint finish and the electrics - though well cared for bikes seemed to go unscathed. The suspension link arms need to be maintained if they're to stay flexible - check for any indication of stiff movement. And that economical motor needs 97RON super-unleaded.
