Used Motorcycles: Ducati 999 buyers guide

Price new: £11,250
Engine: l/c dohc 4v v-twin, 998cc
Power: 116bhp
Top speed: 165mph
Weight: 199kg

That once-controversial styling got the 999 off to an awkward start, even though the bike is more comfortable than the 998 it replaced. It didn't catch on so was replaced by the 1098, which in turn is giving way to the 1198. Now the 999 is rightly seen as a lot of bike for the money.

The most common gremlin is the wiring to the rear light assembly wearing and shorting. Other occasional problems include started relays fritzing out and a hunger for batteries, especially with an alarm fitted.

Failure to start, accompanied by a worrying backfire, is normally just a dead battery - but it could be worse. The digital display will show one of a staggering number of very precise error codes to aid tracking down electrical faults. Servicing is a pain and the schedule needs to be followed rigorously.
