Used price: £670 - £2,745
Engine: 16v 899cc in-line four, 6 gears
Power: 105bhp
Top speed: 175mph
Weight: 183kg

The Kawasaki ZX-9R was never quite sharp enough to cut it as a full-on sports bike, but it makes a fantastic sports tourer. Still it's a fun ride, capable of showing over 175mph on the clocks.

The ZX-9R was designed as a race-rep sports bike so handling is fast, but at the same time the riding position is comfy enough for touring. The pleasingly growly engine has ok low and mid range torque, but most of the power is at the top end of the rev range.

Since it was originally meant to be a sports bike the ZX-9R is not overly equipped, but it does have ok storage space under the seat (enough for a lock and a puncture repair kit).

If possible go for the 'C' variant sold from 1998 onwards as they're lighter and more sporty while still being stable and chilled out enough for the road. Build quality is not great so look for a bike that's been cared for. Paint on the wheels is very thin and the shock can go off quick.
