The V-Tec system on the latest Honda VFR800 divides opinion. Below 6800rpm, the engine runs with 2 valves per cylinder and 4 valves per cylinder above that. The idea (better torque at low revs and more power at high revs) is sound but a lot of people don't like the little kick you get when the needle nudges past 6800rpm - especially when mid-corner.

But the system isn't that intrusive and it doesn't ruin what is a great do-it-all bike. It can commute, tour the Alps and do everything inbetween. Handling is definitely sports-touring rather than all-out sports, but it's neutral and offers a plush ride quality.

Because the VFR has such a sturdy reputation they hold their value well, so they can be expensive to buy used but if you ever sell it you shouldn't lose too much.

The change from gear driven to chain driven cams has led to some issues, so listen for a rattle when the bike is warming up. The regulator/rectifier unit is also prone to failing, especially after 20,000 miles so be wary of bikes approaching that mark.
