Motorcycle insurance bargains: Harley Sportster 883 Iron

Motorcycle insurance costs are an important consideration for any bike buyer. That's why MCN is highlighting some of the best cheap-to-insure motorcycles out there. This time it's the Harley-Davidson Sportster 883 Iron.

Insurance group: 11
New price: from £5,640
Engine: 883cc 4v V-twin, 5 gears
Power: 50bhp
Top speed: 105mph
Weight: 251kg

For some, it just has to be a Harley-Davidson. The Sportster 883 is their most basic and affordable model and the blacked-out Iron version costs just a couple of hundred pounds more. The styling changes mean the Iron 883 isn't just one of the cheapest to insure and affordable Harely's available, it's also one of the cleanest and coolest-looking cruisers on the market.

In all honesty, compared to most other bikes the 883 Iron is slow, lumpy and heavy. Ground clearance is a problem too so you have to take it easy on roundabouts. But that's not what this motorcycle is about.

The Iron 883 is a bike to be seen on, with a mean engine note and laid-back under-stated style. So what if the engine is only good for about a ton? For cruising along at a steady pace the Harley is a treat.

Ok, so there are cheaper cruisers on the market. But they don't have the H-D badge. Plus like all sportsters, the Iron 883 will hold it's value well, so if this is your first cruiser it's a good investment as you'll inevitably sell it and move up.
