In the same way as Soichiro Honda originally made parts for Toyota before forming his own company, Kymco was founded in 1963 to supply parts for Honda. That makes it slightly ironic that in 2008 they started supplying engines to BMW for the G45 X endure motorcycle.
Kymco is actually the trade name for the less catchy Kwang Yang Motor Co, Ltd, and the Taiwanese manufacturers created their first vehicle in 1970, although it was another 22 years before the Kymco name was introduced in 1992. It’s now the largest scooter manufacturer in Taiwan and the 5th largest worldwide
They continue to produce a large range of scooters, along with small capacity 125 and 250cc motorcycles, plus a few ATVS. The standout motorcycles in the range include the reasonably stylish KR Sport and KR Naked 125s, and the Kymco Venox 250cc cruiser. In the scooter range the Kymco Super 8 scooter is probably the pick of the bunch, and is definitely the most stylish modern example of the range. MCN tested the KR Naked 125 back in June 2010 and praised the looks and feel of it as a proper bike alongside equivalent Yamaha and Honda, with good quality components and finish.
