find your ideal motorcycle

Chances are that if you're thinking about getting into motorcycling, you already have an image in your head of your dream bike. But is it right for you? And what license do you need to be able to ride it?

Read on to identify your ideal type of motorcycle and find your dream bike:

big bike

First big bike
If you want the best in terms of performance, handling and involvement, then you need a big bike. Thankfully there are loads of great machines out there that are ideally suited to new riders. You'll need to take your full test to ride one and if you're under 21, you'll have to get the power restricted to 33bhp.

125cc motorcycle
A 125 is the easy way into motorcycling. You don't even have to pass your full test - you can ride a 125cc motorcycle with L plates after taking a day's training course (CBT). They're unintimidating to ride, cheap to run and a great way to learn. Plus they come in all shapes and sizes - from sports bikes to supermotos.

Scooter
Scooters are all about basic and affordable transport. They're comfortable and ideally suited to the city commute (especially since motorcycles are exempt from London congestion charges). Most have a large storage area under the seat for your shopping and helmet.

33bhp legal
If you pass your full motorcycle test before you turn 21, you're restricted to 33bhp for the first 2 years. You can restrict a big bike, but another option is to buy a motorcycle that makes less than 33bhp to begin with. It'll be cheaper to insure, too.
