If you plan to pass or have passed your full motorcycle test, you can go straight on a full sized motorcycle. If you're under 21 there's a catch - you will have to have the power restricted to 33bhp for 2 years, but most manufacturers supply restrictor kits for their models, sometimes even for free.

But what type of motorcycle should you go for? That depends on personal taste, what you plan to use the bike for and where you do most of your riding. Check out the options below and when you've found the right one for you, click to find our bike recommendation for any budget:

sports bike

I want a sports bike...
I'm getting into bikes for the excitement and adrenaline - I don't want some boring old commuter or a dreary big trailie. I'm after something with sticky rubber, a fast motor, excellent suspension and brakes like anchors. But at the same time, I'm a new rider, and I need a big that's usable and suitable for my skill level without compromising in terms of fun and enjoyment.

And I want it all for:

£1500  -  £2000  -  £2500  -  £3000brand new

naked bike

I want a naked roadster...
I need a bike that'll do everything. I want to be able to commute on it, tour, enjoy weekend blasts and maybe even try a track day at some point. It needs to fun to ride with decent handling and performance, but I don't need race spec tech just yet. It should also be good value and cheap to insure.

And I want it all for:

£1500  -  £2000  -  £2500  -  £3000brand new

adventure bike

I want an adventure bike...
I probably won't venture off road much, if at all, but bikes are about escapism and I want something that feels like it could cross the Sahara tomorrow if I wanted it to. I'm quite tall so the high seat doesn't bother me. I also want something cheap to insure with an upright riding position and wide bars for better visiblity and quick steering in town.

And I want it all for:

£1500  -  £2000  -  £2500  -  £3000brand new

something different

I want something a little different...
Why be like everyone else? I'm not bothered about blending in. I want something that'll stand out from the crowd, something a little bit special that I'm proud to own and ride. Obviously it can't just look good though - it has to handle ok and offer enough performance to be fun.

And I want it all for:

£1500  -  £2000  -  £2500  -  £3000brand new
