Biking snow chain equivalent

Since so many are going out on the ice and coming off, here's an idea from German company MV Motorrad, one of our Euro K Club members posted up on the forum regarding these.

Wunderlich also do a set of snow chains for bikes.

As a 17 year old I used to ride my old BSA (A10) about 20miles each way to work all year round. I remember one year when the snow was thick, and iced over, bus ruts, the lot and I never fell off. I think the snow lasted about a week or so. Of course the roads were empty by todays standards ( it would be about 1969 or 70) but it made me think that the old bikes were much more suited to everyday riding (inc. snow) than todays bikes because they were generally lower to the ground, lower compression/softer state of tuning, lower geared, less power etc.and maybe the tyre compounds gave better grip in these conditions. I rode last year on the same type of snow on my zzr and it scared the shit out of me! I'm looking to get some snow chains for this year, but I think the hugger will have to come off!

Three Wheeler?

Putting snow chains on the back like this might just work but what about the front wheel? Surely this will just let go and you will be off...

I had wondered how successful a three wheeler would be in the recent conditions. They are so tall I can imagine them slipping into a sideways movement and then rolling when a tiny bit of grip was restored. Any experiences out there (good or Bad?)

Bit late, YEARS ago I used to rap a rope around my spoked wheels to get more grip, but then I use to ride on frozen lakes too....:S I am still mad but not that mad that I would want to ride on the road in the snow with all the other twocks that cant drive.....and don't give a toss for someone dieing in the road..:S

"AutoSock" make wondrous TUV rated and proven snow and socks for cars, and they work. So how about a similar kevlar type hydroscopic fabric being laced around a bike wheel and pulled tight with drawstrings, for low speed work only... Might even clear the guards.
