The Weston Beach Race could be forced to relocate, after a rival firm usurped the contract held by the annual event for the past thirty years.

RHL Activities - which owns all rights to the Weston Beach Race name - is currently in talks with Sedgemoor District Council about taking the race to neighbouring Burnham-on-Sea or Brean. The move followed North Somerset council's decision to award rival organisers Event 22 the rights to an Autumn-based beach race on Weston's famous stretch of sand.

RHL managing director Gareth Hockey said: "We were surprised when North Somerset Council put out to tender a licence to run an event that is almost identical to the Weston Beach Race.

"Over the past 30 years we have built the Weston Beach Race into one of the biggest sporting events in the UK, regularly attracting more than 2,000 competitors and 100,000 spectators."

RHL reportedly plans to run a four race series over the winter, with the relocated Weston race as the centrepiece.
