In this week's MCN, out January 9, we ride KTM's new big bore trailie, the 1190 Adventure R, the venerable 990's replacement.

MCN becomes one of an exceptionally exclusive club as we travel to New Zealand to ride the legendary Britten V1000.

Also this week: All the latest news, we talk to 'Rocket' Ron Haslam as his race school returns to Donington, and we look at second-hand Harleys.

In sport: Dakar blasts off, and MCN brings all you all the latest from South America, both from the front runners and the Brits.

Great Britten
Possibly the greatest triumph of cottage-industry race-bike engineering ever to come to fruition, the Britten V1000 was the vision of one man. We fly to New Zealand for an incredibly rare opportunity to ride this iconic bike 20 years after it's Isle of Man TT debut.

Great Britten
The ultimate nonconformist race bike, the Britten V1000 was hand-built by a dedicated team led by maverick engineer John Britten in New Zealand in the early '90s. Only 10 bikes remain, and after a year of negotiations, MCN's Adam Child flew half way around the world to ride it.

KTM 1190 Adventure R Scoop First Ride
King of serious off-road, KTM, has BMW's mighty GS firmly in it's sights with the new 1190 Adventure. The Austrian manufacturer has played to its strengths, focusing on ergonomics, agility, light weight and performance using a V-twin from the RC8R superbike. It's a big step forward from the go-anywhere KTM 990, but can it win a bigger slice of the huge on and off-road adventure market?

School of Rocket
In the winter of 1987 Britain's favourite Grand Prix rider spent a day at Donington Park sharing his secrets of speed with a dozen aspiring racers. 25 years later, his race school is a British institution. Ron Haslam tells MCN how it happened...

Living the American Dream
Harley-Davidson is probably the most famous motorcycle brand in the world - and also the most misunderstood. Can you tell your Sportsters from your Dynas? What's it really like being a Harley owner and, if interested, which bike is for you? We find out...

From Superstock to Superstar...
Slovakian Sandra Stammova moved from a successful early career racing superbikes in New Zealand to racing in the ultra-competitive British Superstock 1000 Championship in 2011. She crashed a lot, but has been progressing through 2012, albeit still finding it difficult to qualify. But on a chance trip to Costa Rica, she found instant stardom.

Dakar is GO!
It's early days but the 2013 Dakar looks set for a big shake-up after the two-rider domination of the past seven years. With Marc Coma out and Cyril Despres off the pace in the first two stages and under intense pressure to grab another win for KTM, the following pack sense blood and a chance for glory.
