Have loud pipes had their day? Every bike on the road seemed to have one a decade ago, but they're becoming less common – what's your stance?

I used to have loud pipes back in the day.
Microns were the best for in line fours in the 70's and 80's.
We pretended it was because loud pipes save lives, and all that bollocks, but the reality was that we just wanted to make the grandest entrance.
Some bikes sound OK with more open pipes, V twins especially, but on the whole I think they are for people who are equally as loud in their day to day lives.

i see a lot of bikes parked up and people talking, but not riding their bikes, join a golf club if you want to talk to someone, put your ear plugs in and your helmet on and ride your bike because thats what its all about, it's about riding motorbikes, not talking about knitting patterns. After a good motorbike run it's good to stand about drinking beer and talk motorbike ****. Sorry, who cares what exhaust you have on your bike as long as you actually ride it.

Recently I started getting a bit tired of the noise my sports exhaust was making so I put the baffle back in. Instantly I noticed more cars pulling out in front of me, coming across into my lane, generally just getting cutting me up more. Anyway, my baffle/nut worked its way loose and came off at work so I road home without it. The difference you get with other road users is massive. You can see motorists looking in the mirrors for you, pulling over for you, pedestrians and cyclists all notice you more.
I live near a dual-carriageway so I know exactly what it’s like with bikes & cars with loud exhausts but sitting in my lounge with the TV on I don’t hear them. In my opinion the added awareness a loud exhaust gives you justifies the annoyance. Certainly until other motorists, cyclists and pedestrians start looking out for motorcyclists the sports exhaust stays.
All I would say is if you have to go out late at night, try and keep the revs down.
