The new Ducati Multistrada 1200S looks set to redifine the adventure bike market with its four switchable modes (sport, touring, urban and enduro), which adjust power delivery, suspension and traction control.
At £14,295 the Ducati Multistrada 1200S isn't exactly cheap, but if you're in the market for an affordable, adventure style bike, there's plenty on the used market for under £4000. Here's just a few:

2003 Ducati Multistrada 1000 - 21k miles - £2995
The original Multistrada 1000 is a truly versatile motorcycle. Low screen, smallish tank and limited performance. are only slight nuggles.
We say: A lot of the character of the new Multistrada for half the price.

2003 Yamaha TDM900 - 17k miles - £2999
The parallel twin has plenty of punch for overtakes and firing out of corners, comfort for both rider and pillion is good.
We say: A perfectly good, if overlooked all-rounder.

2003 Triumph Tiger 955i - 7k miles - £3995
The second generation Triumph Tiger is capable of covering serious miles with ease. Many owners fit aftermarket accessories and sell these with the bike. Seat is fairly high at 875mm.
We say: A well equipped and bombproof motorcycle... if you're tall enough.

2003 Suzuki DL1000 V-Strom - 28k miles - £3199
Another overlooked bike, the V-strom is powered by the 1000cc v-twin from the TL series - giving you plenty of power. It's got a top notch chassis, it's comfortable, brisk and excellent value.
We say: May not be as luxurious as a BMW or KTM, but does the job just as well.

2002 Aprilia Caponord - 16k miles - £3495
A brilliant, yet flawed motorcycle let down by poor build quality and soft forks. The v-twin engine is fantastic and the Caponord is well equipped with remote shock adjuster, accessory socket and brilliant headlights.
We say: Cheap on the used market, only let down by soft, unadjustable front suspension.
