News of the 2014 KTM RC390 first leaked two years ago, along with details of the recently-released 1290 Super Duke, when an excitable dealer snapped an image of the full KTM range plans during a dealer conference, then released it onto the internet.

KTM themselves gave a very clear, and public, indication of their intent earlier this year when they released details of the RC390 Cup, as well as unveiling the production-based race bikes before anyone had seen the road versions, which clearly share identical underpinnings to the production model (albeit with a side-mounted Akrapovic race system instead of the production bike’s beautifully integrated underbelly silencer).

KTM knows it has to challenge Kawasaki’s 300 Ninja, and Honda’s CBR250R, in the quality stakes, and the spec and design suggest that it’s in with a fair chance of doing just that.

Power output is the same 43bhp as the 390 Duke, while the weight is up a little thanks to the full fairings, tipping the scales at a claimed 147kg (dry). The resulting power to weight ratio means that the RC390 will sneak in beneath the cut off for A2 licensing laws without the remap required for its naked sibling.

The one-piece steel trellis chassis is supported by WP suspension front and rear, and all rolls on 17-inch wheels boasting 110 front / 150 rear section Metzeler Sportec M5 tyres. Also clearly visible in the images, and mentioned in the leaked spec, is the fitment of ABS as standard. The practicality is further reinforced with a pillion seat and removable pillion pegs, enabling the rear subframe to be tidied up by those wishing to fit the single seat option available as a KTM Powerparts upgrade.
