Staff Blog: Yard Built, Yamaha Blessed

Steve Hunt, 22 November 2013 10:40

After years of bubbling just below the surface, the 'café-racer scene', this once underground segment of the custom-bike world now finds itself cresting the mainstream wave; shows on Discovery Turbo, the celebrated launch of bikes such as BMW's recent NineT and the resurgence of old, classic brands as trendy fashion labels (see the recently launched, Kate Moss-fronted Matchless clothing line; ...

Bullet bobber on a budget

bloomonkey, 24 December 2012 16:06

I decided to customise my Royal Enfield Bullet 500 into a bobber style with a meagre budget of less than a grand. I did everything from the engine rebuild to the respray and artwork on the tank.

Suzuki GS750 cafe racer

jeroen klaassens, 16 November 2012 13:54

In july 2011 I purchased a 1977 Suzuki GS750. Since then I have transformed the bike into a cafe racer. The engine is stock (65,000km). I made my own exhaust, seat, brackets, did all the welding jobs, resprayed the frame (removed all the unnecessary parts), rebuilt the forks and the calipers. The battery sits where the centre stand was. I used imitation ...

My Yamaha YZR500 Norick Abe replica

Wolfgang Hromada, 09 November 2012 20:17

I am from Austria. I have built a replica of Norick Abe´s 1999 YZR500 based on a Yamaha RD500 engine. Modifications and one-off parts are a long list, it took me six years to complete the bike.  Some of the photos attached also show a similar bike of a friend of mine, this is Checa´s YZR500 based on a stock RZ500 chassis.

Is this the ultimate Honda CBX1000?

MCN, 16 March 2012 13:31

A “breakthrough for the Japanese motorcycle industry” was one headline when Honda’s stunning six cylinder CBX was first announced in 1977 and the first photographs which appeared in MCN that year certainly left a lasting impression on one West Country teenager. Thirty five years on Paul Pursey now owns seven of the iconic sixes including this, which features an 1170cc ...

Made in Britain. Chopped in Japan

Conrad Leach, 04 January 2012 12:24

Custom British choppers and bobbers were the main feature at the Mooneyes Show in Yokohama, the world's most prestigious custom bike show of 2011, and it was a fitting tribute to the halcyon days of British motorcycle engineering. But Japanese builders have a unique appreciation and an idiosyncratic interpretation of the versatile twins and singles that dominated the world of ...

My custom 1996 Kawasaki Vulcan 800

Jim Halbert, 05 August 2011 07:26

I traded an old BMW for this '96 Kawasaki Vulcan 800. I thought it looked like a good candidate for a chop job, so over time this is what I did. I stripped it and sold off the good parts on Ebay. I then picked up junk parts to assemble what you see. It includes an old Harley police seat ...

Deus Yamaha SR custom dirt tracker

MCN, 15 July 2011 14:47

The Oddjob is Sydney based Deus' latest pared-down dirt track inspired take on the Yamaha SR500. The original air-cooled 499cc single cylinder was bored out to 542cc and blueprinted by Carl Batley of Cafe Racer, with a Carillo rod thrown in for good measure. A Keihin FCR39 carb lets the motor breathe and a high-level exhaust completes the performance mods. ...

Dominator transformed into desert racer

MCN, 08 July 2011 17:39

This 1997 Honda Dominator encapsulates the notion of transforming a sow's ear into a silk purse. This is third Dominator that Welshman Andrew Greenland has transformed with a total rebuild, shedding the dated plastics for a pared down retro desert racer style. Modifications include gold anodised 17" rims front and rear, custom hand-made seat unit, Baja designs headlamp and CG125 fuel tank. ...
