From today (September 3, 2007) learner riders and drivers will need to score 86 per cent or 43 out of 50 to pass their theory test, compared to 85.7 per cent current required.

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) claims the increase in multiple-choice questions will result in safer riders and car drivers.

The DSA head of lifelong learning, Jill Lewis, has advised candidates to “Prepare thoroughly for their theory test as they would do for any other exam.”

She added “Increasing the number of questions means that the test ensures comprehensive coverage of the whole syllabus.”

The theory driving test will now cost £28.50.
