Variable cylinder management for next Pan European

Honda's emission killing and fuel-economy boosting Variable Cylinder Management system is an almost dead-cert for the next Pan European due around 2011.

The system works by shutting cylinders on and off as they are needed. It’s just one of a variety of massively high-tech innovations set for the Pan European which could also include a new twin-clutch set up that offers the benefits of an automatic transmission with the feelings of involvement of a manual.

There are also some talks of a petrol/electric hybrid version too.

I like the idea of shutting off the cylinders, this has been tried on some cars and gives a great increase in fuel consumption. Im not keen on the automatic transmission though.

My old Pan 1100 had variable cylinders, but suspiciously, only in the wet and never when you wanted it!!!!!! :lol:

I guess I have to admire Honda's thirst for technology, but I'm not sure who asked for it.... I rather enjoy riding a 4 cylinder machine that despite being a tad podgy, feels like a motorcycle. Not convinced I'd enjoy having cylinders being switched on and off for me.... kind of reminds me of the days when I could only afford to ride bikes that worked on all four on a good day. An 'involving' but basically automatic gearbox..... can't really say I'd enjoy that either. My car has a CVT gearbox. I hate it, but can't afford to change it.... But why am I moaning..... I can always buy something else when it's time!

So:

Current engine and gearbox are pretty good. Nope, no real need to change them.
Handling..... sometimes a squirmy (and there are a whole load of opinions on that!) - Yes, fix that please.

Oh well, if Honda were predictable they'd be no fun....
