London Mayoral candidate Boris Johnson says he will allow motorcycles to use bus lanes in the city, if he is elected to the post during polling in May.

The Conservative MP believes motorcycles are a key element in cutting congestion and pollution in London. “I want to encourage people to get out of their cars and use other forms of transport,” he states in a press release, noting that allowing motorcycles to use bus lanes would be a key element in achieving that goal.

Johnson says allowing motorcycles into bus lanes would not have an adverse affect on the safety of other road users, citing a Transport for London report which shows the move would actually cut the number of accidents involving motorcyclists.

“I have studied this report and, as a cyclist myself, I think this is a no brainer,” he states.
