Honda has finally announced performance figures for the DN-01, four months after the production motorcycle was unveiled at the Tokyo show.

The DN-01 makes a claimed 60bhp, and has a hefty claimed ready-to-ride weight of 270kg, so don’t expect a particularly exciting ride. The low 690mm seat height should make that mass easier to control though.

The motorcycle will be available later this year, and Honda say it will cost between £8000 and £10,000.

Power, weight and price are all academic, rumour in the trade is they are going to be as rare as hens teeth anyway.

Performance...

... is about more than just horsepower. In the real world accessible power is more important and that is, as others have noted, where autos without fixed ratios score mightily. The question is not whether the DN01 makes 60 or 600, but how the transmission translates that into `go`. My problem with the DN01 begins withe the price, continues with the comparative absence of practicality compared to the Big Scooter in the areas of luggage capacity, weather protection and overall weight and finishes with the as-yet-unknown of fuel consumption. Unless this baby does 80-per, I cannot see any purpose to it at all. It fails as a commuter, fails as a cruiser, fails as a progenitor of Things to Come, and is too pricey to be sold in the only markets that might be interested in it. Make it a 1200 and sell it to the Yanks.

Well then, lets compare Honda's new hydraulic system to the Aprilia Mana's electrically-controlled CVT (ala Burgman-650) with a stoplight-rabbit 0-30mph race, a 0-60mph race, and standing 1/4 mile. I imagine the hydraulic system is better performance-wise but we'll need a real test. It would also be good to compare the handling of the cruiser-ish 63inch wheelbase in the city compared to the much shorter wheelbase of the Mana. A lot of us have never been on a bike with a wheelbase that long; I wonder if the maneuverability is as bad as I imagine. Bear in mind that both the Mana and DN-01 are targeting the commuter.

One more thing to consider on the drag strip is how a long, low C of G, can assist in resisting the wheely tendency: just look at the shape of dedicated drag bikes and also consider what will happen if you just pin the throttle and dump the clutch to take off on a powerful sportsbike: the DN-01 may get to 60bhp quicker than the sportsbike. I agree absolutely about the price though: market forces will probably either kill it dead or force a big discount. BTW a quite interesting drag race here between an admittedly fairly old Kawasaki sportsbike and a Burgman 650, the Kwacker wins, but not by a lot: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bdq6x8iA5CM

I have to echo Nigglenoo's comments, as a maxi scooter and "proper"bike owner I know how well low power, heavyweight scooters perform. It is all down to always being in the sweet spot of the torque curve.Sure they are no sports bikes but they can make very rapid progress. That said , the DNo1 is a place too far for me. £8 to 10 grand!!! That's what I call a large ballpark figure.Too much, too ugly, no thanks.
