Steve McQueen and Belstaff in legal battle

Steve McQueen was famously fond of his Trailmaster jacket made by British firm Belstaff.

But relations between his estate and the clothing maker seem to have gone downhill since the star’s death.

Last week it emerged the two were locked in a legal battle, with both seeking damages from the other.

Steve McQueen’s heirs have claimed Belstaff used the late star’s name without authorisation to promote its “Steve McQueen Celebration” line.

The actor’s son Chad and granddaughter Molly want unspecified damages and the name to be dropped.

Belstaff has hit back with a counterclaim that the McQueen estate allowed other companies to pretend they made the jacket worn by the screen legend.

The firm announced it was suing for “damages suffered”. 

Belstaff, now owned by the Italian Malenotti family, paid £17,500 at an auction in 2006 for the original Trailmaster owned by McQueen.

The firm has put the classic black belted jacket on display in its Milan showroom.
