First rides & tests
16 December 2009 16:00
The Big Four becomes the Big Five as BMW's first real superbike battles it out with the established stars.
In our world first group test we pit the BMW S1000RR against the class-leading Yamaha R1, Honda's revised-for-2010 Fireblade, the brutal Kawasaki ZX-10R and the Suzuki GSX-R1000. Watch the video for action from the test in the South of France...
To read the full test, pick up a copy of this week's MCN, on sale Wednesday 16 December.

Cant say I agree with Yamaha winning WSB, Ben Spies won the riders Championship, but once again Ducati won the manufacturers title, and i dont believe it will be any different this year. I agree with comments regarding the results including bhp from the bmw mean nothing on our uk roads, which arn't for racing as we all know. There are as some have already said, far better bikes than 1 litre sports for the roads.
On the bike itself, i take my hat off to bmw, who gave a respectable debut in wsb last year. Fair play to them for coming in to the sport and adding competition, which makes for a more enjoyable experience for viewers.
Theres alot more to a bike than just bhp and braking, and in my opinion, it is wsb where the bmw will be judged, certainly not on the M62 !

Good quality vid
It's good to see MCN up their game with the quality of the video items. More like this please, good use of onboard and different angles, as well as subtle use of effects. It makes it so much more interesting to watch than the ususal repeated shot of the same corner.
Well done.

No big bang = boring??
Sure, the long bang was a bold move and sounds cool, but all other litre super bikes boring? What planet are you on? Wind any past 12k and it's not exactly a lullaby...
There's plenty of ground being broken by the beemer too - which makes Yamaha seem childish and conservative - rockers instead of buckets, more hp, more electronics, more, more, more! Let's see how they both look and feel after a couple of years, maybe my old gixxer will still be the bestest slickest sanest road going choice, for me that is...

Big Bang!
There all good and the BMW does look a nice bike, BUT its not got that BIG BANG unlike my R1 C/W 3/4 Yoshi system. Its just is bliss to here such a raw, fresh different sound, Its also mint to ride with effortless power and silky smooth. Lets face it BMW will have produced a nice brown envolope for a good rating in MCN, and being honourable they have done just that.
If it ain't got a Big Bang OR sothing new on the same lines then its just like the rest a bit Boring.
