First rides & tests

MCN's 2009 longterm test fleet includes the unconventional-looking Honda DN-01. It's an automatic with cruiser geometry, a 680cc v-twin engine and shaft drive. So far so odd - but what's it like to ride? Watch the video to find out.

Interesting but...
Its an interesting bike. I'm probably one of Honda's target market too as I am a mature owner who isn't that interested in out and out performance. I'm not really in the market for a cruiser but I like the idea of a simple bike with shaft drive etc. As a long distance commuter I quite like bikes with fairings etc so it almost goes there.
I'm unconvinced about the idea of HFT. I'm concerned that Honda isn't either otherwise why have semi-auto? I would consider a bike with HFT if every other feature was there or if Honda could claim that it increases mpg etc.
I'm quite fond of the basic NTV/Revere engine & shaft drive and like Hondas for reliability but dislike the Deauville because of its looks and because it is so top heavy - this looks like it will be better but I'm still concerned about the huge weight effecting handling. Again I would have prefered a less feet-forward design but...
I'm not sure how this has happened but in the video it looks so ordinary - I was expecting it to look like Judge Dredd's motorbike but it just doesn't. Nobody even gives it a second glance on the video. I wonder if it looks better in the flesh...
The big question is the cost. For 10K I could get some nice bikes and have lots of change. Its trying to compete with a VFR, a CBR600F, a FJ, a Moto Guzzi V7 Classic Cafe and even my existing ER6F which is probably more fun most of the time (and worth peanuts too thanks to the mileage).
That said well done Honda for trying. Now how about putting a diesel engine in it!

Not a bad cruiser
And you can get 2k off if you shop around bringing it to under 8k
About 6.5k is the right price for this bike and it would sell pretty well I reckon.
It looks a lot better than I thought it would, a welcome alternative to the many Harley clones out there.

its too expensive.
if they removed the large footboards and increased ground clearance then it would be more enjoyable to ride.
you keep on grounding bits out if you used to riding committed or like leaning it into the corners.
Honda missed the boat on this one
