Helmet review: Bell M5X

Chris Newbigging, 03 July 2009 12:52

Product: Bell M5X, £324.99Miles covered/time: 500/3 months Compare and buy a Bell M5X What’s good? Protection. This is the second M5X I’ve smacked my head in, and both times it has been a hard blow. My head was unaffected both times, so much so I didn’t realise I’d hit my head until I looked at the damage and matched it ...

How to: Modify your 125

Chris Newbigging, 10 June 2009 10:04

Part of the joy of owning a bike is making it your own – but when you’re starting out it’s easy to get it wrong. As well as the question of taste, there are also legal implications with certain changes, especially when it comes to increasing power and noise. Compare and buy motorcycle products MCN has compiled this simple guide ...

Rev'it Fahrenheit gloves review

Chris Newbigging, 28 May 2009 14:13

Rev’it Fahrenheit gloves, £69.99Miles covered: 1500/two yearsWhat’s good?Because these are three-season gloves (waterproof and suitable for milder days) there’s less padding to hinder feel. They’re warm enough down to around 5°C, and they’ve not leaked yet. They feel secure enough for me to use them as wet weather gloves when I’m racing, and the construction hasn’t broken under use or ...

EDZ All-Season Base Layer review

Chris Newbigging, 28 May 2009 14:09

EDZ All-Season Base Layer, £50 Miles covered:5000/two yearsWhat’s good? I won’t wear one-piece leathers without this – it’s become indispensable. It helps getting in and out of the suit, wicks sweat away and makes life much more comfortable. Suits never snag or pull on my skin because they’re not in direct contact. It works for off-roading, too. What’s not? It’s ...

Suit review: Hein Gericke PSX-R

Chris Newbigging, 22 April 2009 16:10

Best thing about it: The only waterproof clothing I’ve owned that’s comfortable on a sportsbike. It’s a ‘three season’ suit, so it’s not too thick, and the look/cut suits sportsbikes. Worst thing about it: Not warm enough below about 7° for any sort of speed or distance. It’d be fine around town with thermal base layers though. Compare and buy ...

Back protector review: Forcefield Pro L2

Chris Newbigging, 22 April 2009 15:18

Best thing about it: Safety – one big crash plus countless smaller moped racing crashes have been dealt with. Comfort is excellent - the rubber/foam mix softens with body heat to fit your back perfectly. Worst thing about it: Nothing – some might grumble at the price, but unlike a lot of back protectors it retains protection after a crash, ...

Boot review: Puma Desmo Gore-Tex boots

Chris Newbigging, 11 March 2009 11:46

Best thing about it: If I was forced to only have one pair of bike boots, it would be these. They’re lightweight, waterproof and give plenty of feel, but an 80mph slide and tumble failed to damage the boots or me, so they’re tough too. Worst thing about it: Gore-Tex is no longer available, and I’m not sure summer-only version ...
