MCN Biking Britain survey: touring boots under £100

Almost 12,000 readers have filled in MCN’s Biking Britain survey. The results of our findings are printed here and in the print edition of MCN every week.

1. Diadora Bullet - RRP £79.99 The Diadora touring offering is a leather construction but with a waterproof and breathable lining. There are shin and ankle plastic-moulded protectors, a double Velcro closure system and an anti-slip sole. It also features an APS (Air Pump System) in the footbed that makes the boot fit tighter to the foot. Black is the only colour option.

2. Frank Thomas Aqua Street - RRP £79.99 The main construction of this boot is a combination of leather and abrasion resistant fabric. It also has a waterproof and breathable membrane to make it a 12 month boot, has protective inner and outer ankle discs and a ribbed calf flex zone for better fit and comfort. An oil resistant sole and reflective inserts complete the features.

3. Frank Thomas Voyage Aqua - RRP £79.99 Frank Thomas only launched this boot at the tail end of last year, but it’s already been well received. It’s got a full leather construction, has a waterproof and breathable lining and two D-ring and Velcro closure boot tab. It has inner and ankle protectors, a gear lever panel and anti-slip sole.

4. Frank Thomas Aqua Venture - RRP £89.99 The third Frank Thomas boot in the survey results also has a waterproof and breathable inner lining to make it an all-year-round motorcycle boot. The outer construction is a mixtures of leather and fabric panels, there are specifically placed stretch areas for comfort reasons and an anti-slip sole.

5. Frank Thomas Highway Aqua - RRP £69.99 The Highway boot is available in both men’s and a ladies cut and sizes. It has a leather and a claimed highly-abrasive fabric main outer construction and a waterproof and breathable inner liner. The Velcro closure is adjustable, there is a gear shift pad and an oil resistant anti-slip sole.

6. Frank Thomas Aqua Pro Strike - RRP £99.99 The Pro-Strike is a sportier boot from FT with interchangeable toe sliders and a hard plastic shin guard. The main construction is full-grain leather, the inner membrane is waterproof and breathable and it has subtly placed reflective inserts for safer night riding. The sole is oil resistant and anti-slip and they have a gear change plastic mould.

7. Spada Thunder Black - RRP £54.99 This is one of Spada’s touring focussed boots, constructed with a majority leather outer and an inner membrane that’s waterproof and breathable. The shin and ankle sections have hard reinforcements for some protection and the boot fastens with a zip and Velcro flap closure. Available in black only.

8. RST Vortex II - RRP £79.99 RST are probably more recognised for value racing kit but they also have a touring range, including the Vortex II boots. The outer leather in coated for durability, there is an inner plastic moulded shin protector and a waterproof and breathable membrane with a polyester lining. There is a rubber gear change pad, too.

9. Oxford Bone Dry - RRP £59.99 Oxford Products has only just recently entered the bike clothing market, and from the looks of it have already impressed with these year-round boots. They have a waterproof and breathable membrane, a reinforced ankle protector, and there’s a full length zip and Velcro storm flap to keep the closure area dry, too.

10. Spada Element - RRP £54.99 The Element is a slightly differently designed boot to the previously mentioned Thunder, but like the sister boot it also has a fully waterproof and breathable membrane. The outer construction is made from leather and there are protective inserts in the shin and ankle sections as a bonus safety feature.
