TCX Airtech Gore-Tex boots, £169.99
Miles covered/time: 4500/18 months
What’s good: Really lightweight and comfortable – for summer touring and commuting these boots are hard to beat. They’re made from a breathable heavy-duty nylon called Airtech and do a good job of keeping your feet cool.
Meanwhile, the sole has enough flex to be comfortable while you are walking around off the bike. Most summer boots make no attempt at being waterproof, which is bad news when the weather has been as changeable as it has been this year.
I’d say these boots have been 99% waterproof…
What’s not: I’ve had one small leak. Heading home in a downpour I was caught out by a deeper-than-expected puddle. The wave kicked up by the front wheel was enough to wash my left foot half off the peg and saw enough moisture break through to result in a damp sock.
In general rainy weather they have been spot on. The lightweight upper is also something to bear in mind. There is a re-enforced panel for the gearchange and plenty of crash protection, but that doesn’t help when you accidentally put the sidestand down on your foot. Ooops.
