Alpinestars S-MX5 waterproof boots, £179.95 at MCN Shop
Miles covered/time: 3500/six months
What’s good: These waterproof boots thankfully live up to their promise and manage to combine warmth with total waterproofing; something so many other claimed waterproof boots don’t.
They may look like race boots rather than other rival boots that look more like wellies, but they still do a great job when touring. I’ve ridden with these boots at various times throughout the year in all kinds of weather and they manage to cope in all conditions. The soles are grippy and they look good.
What’s not: The sizes come up a bit small so even after months of use they are a bit too snug. I didn’t try them on before use and assumed my normal size nine would be fine but they were initially almost too tight to wear. Months later they have broken in but I would prefer a bit more internal space.
