Alpinestars Excursion Gore-Tex jacket £349.99
Miles covered/time
: 1000/five months

What’s good: This superbly-made, comfortable touring jacket will be my constant companion over the winter months. I’ve already used it loads for MCN testing duties, worn it on a holiday to France in the early summer (when it was still cold) and am now commuting with it.

It’s lovely and warm, but you can comfortably wear it in warmer weather, you just need to remove the lining and unzip the vents.

The Teflon-coated outershell and Gore-Tex membrane shields you from the rain and it comes with CE-certified shoulder and elbow armour and soft chest and back padding (although I wear a racing chest and back protector with it).

It has loads of handy pockets to store and lose your valuables.

What’s not: It’s a little bit bulky with the thermal inner lining attached, but that’s the price you pay for extra warmth in the winter.
