Tucano Urbano Giacca Trip touring jacket, £164, and Motoairbag, £364
Miles covered/time: 2000/two months
What's good: It’s a really nice looking coat that doesn’t look out of place anywhere, with a puffa jacket-style removable lining that can be worn separately. Motorcycle jackets for sale. It’s got lots of pockets and hasn’t let through a drop in persistent heavy rain.
The detachable airbag really does seem like it could lessen the chance of injury. It’s activated when a cord hooked to the bike is pulled out. We yanked it to see what would happen. Inflation was instantaneous and it expanded to protect the head and derriere.
What’s not: The airbag is weighty – it feels like you’re wearing a rucksack – and spoils the look of the jacket. Unhooking yourself every time you dismount is a pain. Replacing the CO2 canister is much harder than the demo film suggests.
If the airbag works in practice, before we know there will be pressure for us all to have one. And it’s too expensive. The jacket is better value but doesn’t take a back protector. The external pockets let in water.
