What’s good: The wax cotton jacket has made a bit of a comeback recently with many manufacturers now offering similarly styled garments.
The Barbour Surtees is arguably the best looking jacket on offer with a stylish leather collar and retro chest patch.
The main material is medium weight with a Sylkoil waterproof coating that’s not sticky so doesn’t pick up dirt as easily as the traditional, smelly wax soaked jackets of old.
The material itself is waterproof and will keep out rain for a while until the design lets it down (see below). Combined with a fleece, the quilted lining adds enough warmth to keep it usable well into the autumn.
What’s not: As it’s primarily a fashion jacket, there are no fastenings on the sleeves, no fold over double flaps on the pockets and no provision for body armour.
The material is also thinner than most bike specific jackets. Think of it as a cool outdoor jacket you can wear on a bike.
