Alpinestars Racing Replica one-piece suit. £1999.99
Time used:
One year

What’s good: These protected me from serious injury a few weeks ago after a cold tyre highside going in to Graham Hill bend at Brands Hatch, on my race bike.

It was one of those crashes when I fell from a great height rather than speed, so it’s more about how the body armour and Alpinestars back (£119.99) and chest protector (£44.99) worked on impact, rather than how the leather and seams faired sliding across the tarmac.

My suit is a custom size and design, but made in the same way and with the same leather as the off-the-pegs versions. I landed flat on my back during the crash and then I tumbled.

You can see the marks left by the armour and the trackside kerb on the leather, but aside from a bruised bum, I didn’t feel a thing. The leather is still intact and none of the stitching burst.

What’s not: It breaks my heart to see my leathers so battered.
