Oxford RT30 Roll top tailpack/backpack/pannier - £69.99
Miles covered/time: 400/two months
What’s good: The Oxford RT30 roll top bag has been cunningly designed so that with a plethora of plastic D-rings and straps it can be used as a tailpack, a backpack or a pannier (in conjunction with another pair or RT30 bags).
It’s well made, with a durable rubberised outer, a separate liner and a roll top opening that is fastened with three buckles.
It has three useful external pockets with waterproof zips for easy access to smaller items and a high-viz flap on the back, that can be folded away if you have an aversion to bright yellow reflective material.
You can stuff a pleasing amount of kit and travel detritus into its thirty litres, whilst it packs down fairly compactly.
What’s not: Fitting the thing is quite frankly a pain. One of the two main Velcro straps isn’t long enough to fit under the seat of my Bandit 650, so it needs the additional webbing straps to lash it down securely.
As it’s a performance to fit, especially when fully loaded, I’ve taken to leaving it on the bike when I arrive at a destination and just emptying the contents.
If you leave any of the outer zips even fractionally open the bag is no longer waterproof and the internals quickly become sodden.
