Q. I’ve got a Kawasaki Z1000SX and I’m looking at getting a paddock stand for it. Rather than one that lifts it at the rear wheel spindle, I want to use the two threaded holes in the swingarm and two bobbins screwed in there. Is there anything I should watch out for?

A. The Z1000SX has got quite compliant suspension and settles quite low, especially if you’ve a pillion on-board. In that situation it is possible for those bobbins to foul the inside of the exhaust silencers, so make sure you unscrew them before every ride.

To be honest, the same holds true for most bikes. The majority of (both genuine and aftermarket) paddock stand bobbins are not specifically designed for each individual application/model and are inherently just universal depending on the thread diameter.

As motorcycle models and designs change this potential problem may not just affect the Z1000 model range, but other manufacturers as well.
