MaxLite earplugs, £0.37ea
Time tested: 50,000miles+ / 5 years
What’s good? I don’t wear earplugs on every ride – simply because I don’t much like wearing them, but on certain types of bike (especially adventure bikes) I have to wear them all the time. I’ll also wear them if I know I’ll be doing hours on end of motorway slog. When I do squish some into my lugholes, it’s usually the green MaxLite ones, or the yellow and magenta LaserLite versions if I can’t find any greens. The only significant difference is that the green ones will roll a bit thinner for those of us with fairly thin ear canals. I tend to get an average week of commuting out of a pair, which is ten uses, and about 600 miles, then I lob them and tear open a new packet. That’s less than £20 per year at my rate of use – which is a price worth paying for protecting your hearing.
What’s not? In twice-daily use you will rattle through a lot of them, regardless of how clean you keep your lugholes. Best bought as a box, which will probably last you a couple or more years. Be careful not to insert them too deep into your ear, as you can cause damage.
