Ion Air Pro 2 video camera: £299.99
Time used: Six months
What’s good? I’ve been using this to create footage for MCN videos and long termer blogs. It’s a solid, well-made waterproof unit and very easy to switch on and off when you’re riding – almost impossible to do easily with the class-leading GoPro. The HD videos it produces is excellent and almost up there with the GoPro, too…but not quite.
What’s not? There aren’t many places to put the camera on a faired bike, using the supplied clamp, but it’s ok on a naked with more tubular sections to fix to. The mounting isn’t long enough to get the camera away far enough from your bike, so you video more of the bike/you, than the view ahead. It’s probably better for other sports than biking.
I’ve also I discovered the camera won’t charge when the memory card is full, or when there’s no card in it, only after I sent it back to Action Cameras, thinking it was faulty. That isn’t mentioned in the user’s manual. The camera doesn’t tell you how much battery you have left, or how full the memory card is getting. It’s died on me a few times and I’ve been left with a fraction of the footage I was expecting. Deleting and formatting used footage on my Macbook doesn’t clear the SD card, so I have to format it on an old PC, which is a pain. I’m not sure if that’s a computer or camera problem, but either way this camera isn’t as easy to live with as a Go Pro.
