Q. I have an old Kawasaki GPZ500 and ride 50 miles every working day through Perthshire, Scotland. With the frost and snow on its way are there any winter tyres that will cope in ice and snow.

Believe me where I live there will be loads of black ice. My wife needs her car for work so hubby is stuck with winter biking.

A. Metzeler has developed some cold-weather scooter tyres, but the demand for winter tyres is so low for most bikes that it’s not cost-effective for firms to develop them.

No tyre, winter or summer, will grip on black ice, but Continental’s TKC80 Twinduro rubber has “M and S” marked on the sidewall to show it will work in mud and snow and offer the best grip, but not in your bike’s uncommon sizes I’m afraid. Have you thought of getting a cheap trail bike instead?
