Why won’t Aprilia SR50 start well when hot?

Marc Abbott, 25 January 2011 15:07

My nipper has a fuel-injected Aprila SR50 Ditech. When it runs it has a really good little engine and will fly along at 35mph all day. The trouble is, it’s an absolute pig to start hot or cold. My injected bikes start with no throttle action, but with this you have to thumb the starter, constantly moving the throttle until ...

Is my Bandit 600’s fuel tap faulty?

Marc Abbott, 25 January 2011 15:04

I have a 2000 Suzuki Bandit 600 and when I have the fuel tap in the ‘on’ position it starts to run poorly, as though it isn’t getting enough fuel. But when I put the fuel tap to the ‘prime’ position it runs fine. Do you think the fuel tap is faulty or could it be something else? Jackie Reid, ...

Is it safe to disconnect my battery?

Marc Abbott, 28 December 2010 07:00

My friend told me that I cannot disconnect the old battery completely on my Suzuki GSX1400 as this means I will “lose the memory in the ECU”. Is this correct?Walter Calne, email  The moment you disconnect one of the battery leads it is disconnected “completely”, so if your friend’s theory was right no one would be able to change batteries. ...

Can I get a custom-made screen?

Marc Abbott, 27 December 2010 07:00

I have a 2007 Yamaha FJR1300A, which is a great bike, but I have an issue with the screen. When it’s down I just get buffeted to pieces, and if I put the screen up the wind just pushes my head forward from behind. I have looked at several screens and they are all bigger, wider and taller, and I ...

What's causing my ST1300 to wiggle?

Marc Abbott, 01 December 2010 12:38

I have a Honda ST1300, that’s in generally fine fettle, with good tyres and swingarm, and with steering head and wheel bearings in good condition, too. However, when pulling away, the bike feels like the back end is doing a little wiggle. I even thought that the engine bolts might be a little loose, but no joy there either. The last ...

Why won't my Honda CBF500's lights come on?

Marc Abbott, 22 September 2010 14:03

When I start my Honda CBF500 up the headlight should come on automatically.Sometimes it works and sometimes not. However, after riding for a few minutes it comes on and stays on. Neither dip nor main beam will work on their own when it¹s playing up. However, main beam will work on the passing/flasher switch.Chrisg, MCN forums The switching is done ...

Advice: What’s causing Daytona 955i's electrical woes?

Marc Abbott, 24 August 2010 16:41

What’s causing Daytona 955i's electrical woes? Q.My 1999 Triumph 955i Daytona is suffering from an increasing list of electrical faults. First the brake light stopped working, now the indicators have stopped and burnt out two flasher relay units. Today the horn has failed. There is a new battery, but that’s made no difference and I really need to track down ...

Advice: Are my Fazer's brake discs at fault?

Marc Abbott, 24 August 2010 16:36

Are my Fazer's discs at fault?Q. My recently acquired Yamaha FZS600 is great but for the high-pitched “scraping” whine from the front wheel. The dealer tells me it's the front discs and says all Fazers do it. Do they? And can nothing be done? It spoils the fun of an otherwise delightful ride.Craig Martin, MCN forums A. That sound means that ...

Are my wheel bearings shot?

Marc Abbott, 12 July 2010 16:46

Fellhopper: My GSX-R750 K2 has just developed a 'droning' noise from the front end (wheel?) it does it in all gears at speed and also with the clutch pulled in 'coasting'. I have just solved one noise with a new chain and sprockets too. Is this 'new' noise a knackered front wheel bearing anybody? Should I drop the wheel out ...
