Helmet Review: Arai Tour-X3 helmet

Steve Farrell, 19 July 2013 11:41

Arai Tour-X3 helmet, £349.99 (superseded by Tour-X4, £439.99) Time tested: 10,000 miles/two years What’s good? It's one helmet for everything. There's a detachable peak for off-roading, which fits over the visor, still allowing it to open and close. You can also fit the peak without the visor if goggles are your preference. Without the peak it's a road or track ...

Helmet review: Arai Tour-X3

Steve Farrell, 02 February 2012 15:02

Arai Tour-X3, £354.99 (£299 on MCN Shop; superseded by Arai Tour-X4) Miles covered/time: 3500/one year What’s good: It’s an off- and on-road lid in one.  Detach the peak and you have a normal helmet for the road. Put it back on and it’s an off-road/adventure lid with a visor. The Arai name gives you a certain confidence in the level ...

HJC RPHA-10 helmet

Steve Farrell, 17 May 2011 09:40

HJC RPHA-10 helmet, £249.99 (£229.99 on MCN shop) Steve Farrell Miles covered/time: 3000/three months What's good: For me, the best thing is the fit. I’m sure I’m not alone in having an oval-shaped head. Many helmets which initially seem to fit cause an agonising pressure point on my forehead after an hour of wearing. The HJC RPHA-10, though, fits perfectly. ...

Momo Fighter helmet

Steve Farrell, 08 March 2011 10:48

Momo Fighter helmet, £179.99Miles covered/time: 1000/two months What’s good: Obviously this helmet is all about the looks. It manages that rare thing of being an open-face lid that doesn’t make its wearer look like a berk, probably because it’s styled like a helicopter pilot’s helmet. It’s ‘new’ because the model has been given a retractable inner dark visor and (easily) removable ...

Product review: Tucano Urbano throat collar

Steve Farrell, 26 January 2011 16:07

Tucano Urbano throat collar, £29 Time owned: Two monthsWhat’s good: Balaclavas can be itchy and irritating and are insufferable if you get the sneezes. This alternative promises protection from the wind and wet without smothering your face. It attaches to your helmet with sticky Velcro patches so you only have to put one thing on your head instead of two, ...

Kit review: Tucano Urbano helmet bag

Steve Farrell, 06 October 2010 14:50

Tucano Urbano helmet bag, £24.90 Time owned: Four months What’s good? Tucano Urbano does a good line in innovative solutions to the every day impracticalities of motorcycling and this helmet bag is typical. It lets you chain your helmet to a wheel while it’s zipped up inside the waterproof bag, providing secure and dry storage. The chain goes in one ...

Helmet review: AGV GP-Tech

Steve Farrell, 02 February 2010 16:59

AGV GP-Tech helmet, £449.99 Miles covered/time: 3000/six months What’s good? Awesome styling. I love those black flashes on the side which look like extensions of the visor, especially when a black visor is fitted. Save £££s on motorcycle helmets I’ve got an oval-shaped head and often find apparently well-fitting helmets cause painful pressure points at the front and back after ...

Kit review: Ferrari Rosso helmet

Steve Farrell, 10 September 2009 17:19

Product: Ferrari Rosso helmet, £179.99 (£161.99 on MCN Shop) Miles covered/time: 2000/one yearWhat’s good? If you’re prepared to accept the risk of having an exposed chin, open-face helmets make sense for town riding, and this one is a thing of beauty. The visor is big enough to stop rogue bits of dust getting in your eyes and the chin strap ...

New government helmet safety ratings

Steve Farrell, 14 April 2009 16:20

Safety ratings for 28 crash helmets have been unveiled by government testers. The helmets have been tested in the Department for Transport’s Safety Helmet Assessment and Rating Programme (SHARP). The news is good if you own a Bell, whose helmet scored the maximum five, but bad if you own an RST PC1S, which scored just one.  The 28 new results bring ...
