Mobile phones are an essential tool for long distance touring. Not only do they keep you in touch with loved ones but could become a lifesaver if you need to call for help. The trouble is, venture to more unusual countries and there¹s no guarantee the mobile network you use at home will talk to the local network of the place you're in.
The Telestial Passport Lite roaming prepaid SIM card costs just $5 and will give coverage in over 140 countries. The majority of calling rates are below 99cents per minute and incoming text messages are free. Countries include India, Namibia, Iraq and even Japan. Fit the SIM into a low value GSM enabled phone (a couple of quid on Ebay) and you¹ve got the perfect emergency mobile. Just remember to take a charger!
