World class Motocross racing, gravity-defying Freestyle MX and a packed programme of entertainment aimed at visitors of all ages is coming to
Skelder Bank near Whitby this weekend when round four of the Red Bull Pro Nationals is staged at the spectacular circuit.
Europe’s premier Motocross Family Festival, the Red Bull Pro Nationals boasts a unique mix of on-track action coupled with off-track attractions and activities that engage and excite in equal measure.
The racing boasts an international field of professional stars featuring GP winners and national champions from nine countries including South Africa, Estonia, France and – for this round only – Iceland. There are also the up and coming stars of the Red Bull Elite Youth Cup featuring the UK’s hottest young talent plus classes for amateur adult racers.
North Eastern Motocross racers Matt Moffat and Jay Hague will be hoping to make the most of home advantage when round four of the Red Bull Pro Nationals pitches camp at the spectacular Skelder Bank circuit near Whitby on July 20-21.  Matt, from Newton Aycliffe, currently sits in sixth in the fiercely-contested Pro MX2 class while Jay, from Easington near Peterlee, is leading the Big Wheel 85cc division of the Red Bull Elite Youth Cup.
“It’s going to be good,” says 22-year-old Matt. “I know Whitby well. It’s always prepared well and it’s got some really big jumps. I won there two years ago so I’m confident I can get a good solid result this time around.  “The championship’s not going as good for me this year as it did in 2012 but with strong local support Whitby could very well be the place where I start to turn my season around and threaten for top three finishes. There’s no reason why not.”
With three rounds down 14-year-old Jay, a pupil at Easington Academy, is shaping up to be the dominant force in his class with two podium-topping performances helping him to open up a 37-point lead. Second last time out at Culham Park in Oxfordshire, Jay’s looking forward to racing close to home.  “It’ll be nice not to have to travel hours to get to the track,” says Jay. “So far we’ve raced in Cornwall, Somerset and Oxfordshire so Whitby’s local to me and I’m hoping I’ll get lots of support from the North Eastern fans – especially as I’ll be running the red championship leader’s number plate.  “I just need to work on my starts – I know if I get out in front I can pull away from the rest of the field.”
Family festival.  Its not all racing!!
Away from the track the focus is firmly on family fun and getting youngsters active. There will be weekend-long youth MX Try-Out Experiences giving younger visitors the opportunity to learn to ride under qualified supervision.  On the Sunday there will be Zorb Balls, bungee trampolines, bouncy castles, face painting and appearances from  children’s TV favourites Peppa Pig and George, Bob the Builder and Fireman Sam in the Kidzone area.
And Sunday is also the day we wheel out the aerial gymnasts of the MX world when the UK’s top Freestyle Motocross riders hit the ramps. What these high-flying showmen can do has to be seen to be believed as they whip and backflip their 100kg machines 40 feet above the ground.  On the gate admission is just £16 for adults, £4 for children and £36 for a family of four.
Skelder Bank will be signposted from the A171 west of Whitby. Postcode for satnav users is YO21 1TN
