In another landmark ‘First’ for Kevin and Julia Sanders, founders of GlobeBusters Motorcycle Adventure Travel, news has come through that the couple reached Mount Everest base camp last week, while riding their BMW R1200 GS motorcycles. They were accompanied by team mate Mark Hamilton.
Kevin and Julia reached the base of the world’s highest mountain during their current epic motorcycle ride from London to Beijing in China.
The GlobeBusters Team are currently researching a new motorcycle adventure which will join the company’s travel and adventure portfolio from 2010. Both riders have already covered over 8,000 miles since leaving from the UK on March 28 and it has been one of their most challenging rides to date. Mark joined the team a few weeks ago.
It is believed that this may be the first time that British motorcyclists have reached Everest Base Camp and the achievement adds further accolades to the two Guinness World Records that Kevin and Julia hold. These are for being the fastest motorcyclists around the world and the fastest riders to complete the journey between the top of Alaska to the bottom of South America.
“This has been our toughest motorcycle journey yet” Said Julia Sanders, “But it was truly incredible to reach Everest Base Camp and see the formidable mountain above us. People there were amazed to see our motorcycles rolling in. Being there was awe-inspiring and really put the icing on the cake of our journey to China.”
Two days after leaving Everest, the GlobeBusters team arrived in the Tibetan capital Lhasa, where they were able to communicate their news and have a well deserved rest before Continuing on their journey to Beijing.
Kevin Sanders said “Southern Xinjiang Province and Western Tibet provides some of the most remote, challenging and breathtaking riding on the planet. Massive vistas, incredible 5000m passes, countless bends and "must see" sights, like Everest, Mount Kalaish and the Potala Palace.”
The GlobeBusters team still have further challenging and enjoyable riding ahead and are now in Yunnan province which is on the border with Laos. The team will then head north through Chengdu, Xi’an and onwards to Beijing.
The team are riding bikes equipped to deal with all that the long and sometimes arduous route can throw at them. Team members are riding BMW GS motorcycles, which have been equipped by Touratech. Navigation is assisted by Garmin GPS’s and essential survival kit includes clothing and equipment from Cotswold Outdoor and Kriega.
