For my 2011 three week/3500 mile solo European tour, I travelled on some quite challenging roads!
On Sunday 14th August I took the ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao at a not unreasonable cost of £255. I has also prebooked the return sailing (Calais to Dover) with P&O for £30.
Thankfully, the Bay of Biscay was like a millpond! Upon leaving in the ferry terminal in Bilbao, I turned left and followed the scenic coast road towards Bayonne and Biarritz, then turned right and followed the Pyrenees lengthways down to Menton; then up to Switzerland via the Route Grande Alps. Then through Germany, Luxemburg, Belgium and back though the Ardennes (Walloon region) to catch the Calais to Dover ferry on Saturday 3rd September.
The temperatures were extremely variable and challenging for both bike and rider; the French Riviera was 43 degrees centigrade! As expected, the Black forest was quite a contrast; extremely wet and cold!
By the way, the average total cost per day (excluding the ferries, but including everything else; food, fuel, accomodation etc) was a very reasonable 44 euros!
To provide a clearer indication of my actual expenditure, I've detailed the fixed and variable costs. My little ZZR600 just sips fuel; ridden gently she can readily acheive 70/80 mpg. Apart from one night spent in a hotel, I camped and mostly bought food locally in supermarkets; just had some fruit for lunch, together with that classic camping staple for the evening meal; pasta and chicken
Fixed Costs: Brittany Ferries @ £255.00 P&O Ferries @ £30.00.
Variable Costs (inc' food, fuel and accomodation): Europe; 3,000 miles/19 days @ £769.53 UK; 500 miles/2 days @ £76.65
Total Cost: £1,131.18
