Aprilia SRV850 (2012-current)

£8,432

839cc, 76bhp, 126mph, Insurance group

The world’s most powerful ever scooter is loads of fun but has an unfinished feel, with iffy suspension and a lack of attention to detail. If outrunning hot hatches on a step-thru is you’re thing, you’ll love it. If you buy it believing Aprilia’s claim that it corners like a sports bike, you’ll be disappointed. It’s essentially a tweaked and ...

Quantya Evo1 Strada (2009-current)

£9,100

cc, 16bhp, 43mph, Insurance group

Even the most militant environmentalist is going to be disappointed with the performance and durability of the Quantya Evo1. It accelerates swiftly to its 40mph top speed and is very maneuverable in traffic but its range is poor and the power gauge inaccurate. Until these major technological issues are solved, as I'm sure they will be in future models, the ...

Harley-Davidson XR1200R (2008-2012)

£7,655

1202cc, 90bhp, 125mph, Insurance group 14

Basically, perhaps very basically, the Harley-Davidson XR1200R is a good bike. Dynamically the XR1200R performs and handles better than any Harley before. It’s brisk (if not exactly fast), fun to throw around and looks good, too. The main disappointment is that it’s finish and spec is pretty crude and the XR1200R looks like its engineering came out of a Polish ...

Buell XB12 Super TT (2007-2008)

£7,295

1203cc, 100bhp, 133mph, Insurance group 14

The Buell XB12STT is a new, horny looking, supermoto-inspired derivative of the Buell XB12S Lightning and Buell XB12R Firebolt series is probably the most fun Buell motorcycle yet. Great looks, a stumpy and sharp chassis plus the familiarly grunty 1203cc Harley-Davidson derived engine add up to motorcycle that’s great to hoon about out. The Buell XB12STT suffers from limited practicality and ...

Moto Guzzi Nevada 750 (1991-2012)

£6,674

744cc, 48bhp, 110mph, Insurance group 9

The Moto Guzzi Nevada 750 is a modest cruiser which is a surprisingly competent all-round bike as well as an effective posing tool. It’s one of Guzzi’s older generation of bikes and has had very few updates since 1989 but it doesn’t matter. It’s excellent round town, works over distance with a  screen fitted and has a charm the Japanese ...

Cagiva Navigator (2000-current)

£6,999

996cc, 95bhp, 132mph, Insurance group 13

The Cagiva Navigator isn’t a giant trailie in the mould of BMW’s chuffing GS. Au contraire - this is a sportsbike with wide bars, a super supermoto if you like. The comfort and tank range make the Navigator a great cross-country motorcycle and the ex-superbike motor takes the performance way beyond the reach of its competitors. Only the firm’s fragile ...

Buell XB12S Lightning (2003-current)

£7,745

1203cc, 100bhp, 150mph, Insurance group 16

The Buell XB12S Lightning is weird but it works. An antique, character-rich engine in a stubby street-fighter motorcycle chassis dripping technical innovation. Buell motorcycles is a subsidiary of Harley-Davidson set up by employee/ motorcycle racer/visionary Eric Buell. The Buell XB12S Lightning  is a very individual motorcycle and hugely enjoyable to ride. Easy to love if hard to justify.

Benelli Tornado (2003-current)

£6,195

898cc, 133bhp, 167mph, Insurance group 17

The Benelli Tornado is a uniquely styled Italian sportsbike that handles and sounds like few other motorcycles, thanks to a big-capacity triple-cylinder motor and high quality suspension. Prices have crashed from their £11,700 high, with unused Benelli Tornado Tre examples now going for £6,195 - that's a lot of motorcycle for the money.
