Honda CBF500 (2004-current)

£3,900

499cc, 56bhp, 125mph, Insurance group 9

One of the best value commuter/novice motorcycles around, the Honda CBF500 is a decently quick twin cylinder motorcycle that's well made, reliable and handles predictably. It does everyhting you can ask in a novice-friendly package and holds its resale value too. Compared to the Kawasaki ER-6 the Honda CBF500 perhaps looks a little bit plain, but some folk prefer less flash.

Yamaha FZ6 Fazer (2004-current)

£4,699

600cc, 90bhp, 141mph, Insurance group 12

After the (hugely popular) old Fazer 600 failed to meet new EU emissions laws in 2003, Yamaha came up with this new alternative and it slots perfectly into the modern market. The Yamaha FZ6 Fazer looks sharp, has a brilliant motor, excellent handling and offers huge versatility. Towns, twisties and long treks… it can do it all. A great all-rounder. ...

Cagiva Raptor 650 (2003-current)

£4,999

645cc, 69bhp, 125mph, Insurance group 10

The Cagiva Raptor 650's smart Italian style plus a reliable Japanese engine equals a cool, capable light/middle weight all round motorcycle. It’s a blast on back roads but long motorway journeys can be blustery. It’s an extremely unusual bike – imported by Dorset dealer Three Cross Motorcycles.

Aprilia Atlantic 500 (2002-2006)

£4,349

460cc, 37bhp, 100mph, Insurance group 8

The Aprilia Atlantic 500 is somewhat boat-like as super scooters go, and heavy with it, but the Atlantic is nevertheless remarkably sprightly. 2005’s updates modernised the look and updated the frame and suspension. The Aprilia Atlantic 500 is roomy, stable, practical, rides well with great brakes and lots of nice little touches. Even hardcore bikers could have fun on this.

Aprilia Pegaso (1997-current)

£4,899

659cc, 50bhp, 112mph, Insurance group 9

The Aprilia Pegaso 650 is a stylish street motorcycle that’s more supermoto than its traillie-esque predecessors. Easy to ride and with great handling, it’s an ideal motorcycle for newbies and, with its lower seat option, smaller riders too. Shame the Aprilia Pegaso 650 has snatchy fuel injection but it sure looks great.
