Moto Hispania Duna SM125 (2009-current)

As the name suggests, the Moto Hispania SM1125 is a Spanish made learner legal supermoto. It certainly looks the part and will have young potential customers drooling at shop windows. It’s competitively priced, being one of the cheapest in its class, but is let down by poor build quality and by using an old air-cooled Yamaha engine.

The Runner is a long-term favourite in the scooter market, and for this year the original design was finally updated. Now four-stroke, the Runner is a sporty-looking and practical machine.

Piaggio Typhoon 50 (1993-current)

The Piaggio Typhoon 50 has been around 16 years – as long as the teens allowed to ride it! Originally a cutting edge sports scooter, the lightweight Typhoon is still a lot of fun but is now at the bottom end of the sports 50 price scale, making it good value for money.

Suzuki DR125SM (2008-current)

It does what is says on the tin but with some added extra style. The four stoke motor is virtually bullet proof if on the slow side and old compared to the two stoke competition. But it’s dependable, easy to ride, cheap to run, light, functional but with added extra Supermoto styling.

Rieju MRX125 (1997-current)

The Rieju MRX125 is a pukka dirt style learner trailie from Spain with excellent road manners, quality detailing and tempting price. Four stroke engine is from Yamaha so is proven and reliable. Performance  adequate rather than stunning, but all-ropund a great introduction to motorcycling.

Rieju SMX 125 (1997-current)

The Rieju SMX 125 and 50 models are Supermoto styled bikes aimed at novices, with the 125 featuring a 14bhp Yamaha engine, Paioli suspension and a tall seat height. The 50cc SMX Pro version also has trick bits like Galfer wavy dics and a chromed exhaust system. Just that bit more stylish than the average learner bike.

MZ SX125 (2002-2005)

It's like Skoda cars; once you get your head around the concept of riding an MZ, you'll probably realise how good they can be. The MZ SX125 has a gutsy little 15bhp motor, a lanky lad sized chassis and decent off-road ability if you fancy it. Bit expensive compared to Far Eastern 125s, but well made.

Sherco 50 (2003-current)

A tiny, Minarelli-engined, screamer that’s collected a hatful of 50cc supermoto titles, including multiple French National crowns. It handles superbly, tuning parts are relatively easy to come by and, most importantly, it’s easy to de-restrict. Providing you’ve got the appropriate licence, of course. Ahem.
