The £6999 Mana 850 GT ABS is a clever bike and so much more than just a motorcycle with a big scooter engine. The new fairing and ABS add an extra layer of practicality and safety to a package which seems ordinary on paper, and a bit dull to look at, admittedly, but the Mana 850 GT ABS is absolutely fantastic in real life.

Engine

MCN rating rating is 3
Owners' rating rating is 0

The Aprilia Mana GT's 839.3cc V-twin has a CVT (continuously variable transmission), but also three ‘auto’ modes: Touring, Sport and Rain, to suit your mood and conditions. It can also be turned into an electronically controlled, semi-automatic seven-speed sequential gearbox with a flick of a button. It’s a willing lump and perfectly suits the effortless riding the clever transmission allows.

Ride and Handling

MCN rating rating is 5
Owners' rating rating is 0

The Mana has a proper motorcycle frame, chunky swingarm, new 17-inch Pirelli Angel ST sports touring tyres, upside down forks and radial brakes. This lets the Aprilia glide over bumps, and brake and corner a thousand times better than a scooter. It’s so much fun.

Equipment

MCN rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 0

The fuel tank is under the seat, leaving room for a big, easy to access storage compartment, large enough for a lid, where the tank normally is. ABS and a fairing add to the safety and practicality and all the controls are well laid-out and easy to use. There’s a mobile-phone holder and a 12V-power socket too. Compare and buy parts for the Aprilia Mana GT in the MCN Shop.

Quality and Reliability

MCN rating rating is 5
Owners' rating rating is 0

The ManaGT feels plush and well made, almost Honda-like in its build quality.

Value

MCN rating rating is 4
Owners' rating rating is 0

Real bike spec and components, coupled with advanced transmission, comfort and safety features push the price into real bike territory – but not beyond. And it’s such a hoot to ride, as well as being practical, we call that good value.

Love it

I've had a Mana for 5 months. So far nothing has gone wrong and I love the thing to bits. Buy one second hand if you can live without the ABS and stick a Puig screen on it. Save yourself a fortune. I bought mine with 700 miles on it for 4700. It was absolutely mint and it's still lovely now.

You won't believe how great it is to have some luggage space and since most people don't know it's there, it's unlikely ever to be broken into. Unlike a top box.

Plenty fast enough for town and gets 44mpg, in town. Much more out of town though I haven't measured precisely. The trip computer is wildy pessimistic by the way.

Slow speed maneuvering is a doddle, and it's brisk off the lights. ABS would be the only thing I would add after I locked the front when a security guard dropped a barrier in front of me as I was leaving a car park!

It's uncomfortable after more than an hour in the saddle but I'm very tall. Other than that I can't fault it.

Why anybody would want to commute with a clutch is beyond me. Go do it.

More bike than you'd expect

The Mana GT is most definitely available...I demo'd one last weekend and the dealer said theyre getting lots of interest.  Ive got to say, I can see why.  what a fantastic bike!  Its so clever and the gear box is so good.  At first I played around with the paddles on the bars and the conventional gear lever but after a bit I just forgot about them and enjoyed the most relaxing riding experience I think ive ever had!  Bliss on a bike it was :)  I reckon you could fit a chinese on your way home from work under the false tank as well, complete with starters :)  Probably keep it warm as well haha!

Very impressive, Aprilia.  Londons' a nightmare at rush hour, my left hands' usually dead by the time I get to work.  I'm looking for a second bike to commute on so I can keep the Kawasaki for weekend use and I think just found the perfect solution  :)))

Is the Mana GT actually available?

I know the Shiver GT has been availabl for a while, and the Mana GT mentioned for nearly as long. But you can actually buy one?

And are the panniers standard - I'd hope so for the GT tag?!

But as others mention, this does seem to make a lot of sense. Only concern  is - cvt can be surprisingly awkward in very slow traffic trickles - you can't (well, I can't) always filter to the head.

Makes so much sense

A really practical little bike that makes a lot of sense and addresses a lot of the shortcomings with middleweight sports/tourers.   I will be doing a test ride soon.  I'm not too sure about reliability and the spares situation with Piaggio/Aprilia group.  If the dealer can convince me it's better, I might just part with the kids inheritance.

I Think.....

Its a really good concept....

Iam strangly tempted by one of these.... they make more sense than a commuter and they dont cost that much money in all reality... good styling, good stats and equipment compliment them!
