Aprilia’s RS250 is the last of a dead breed; its ring-a-ding-ding the requiem for meaningful two-strokes and their sweet perfume. Built to ape the Italian factory’s 1993 250GP winner the motorcycle perched a reed-valve motor in a near-perfect chassis to produce one of the finest handling machines of all time. Bella.

Ripped from Suzuki’s RGV250 the Aprilia RS250's single crank V-twin stroker makes you work for your reward. It hits perfect pitch at 10,500rpm, delivering 55bhp with a sweet punch. For anyone raised on multi-cylinder four cylinder motorcycles it’s initially frustrating, but persevere – nothing worth striving for comes easily. So hone your gear selection, hang on to every rpm and ride it like you stole it.

The Aprilia RS250 is the enemy of kneesliders everywhere. The chassis is blessed with a supernatural composure that remains unfazed regardless of lean angle. The upside-down forks, banana swingarm and Brembo four-piston brakes aren’t just for show; they’re the best combination of talent since George, Ringo, Paul and John.

Skimping on pricy fully-synthetic two-stroke oil is asking for trouble. Without it engine life is very much compromised. You’re looking at a new piston kit (from £65 or so) every 6000 miles, too. Aprilia RS250s are as likely to be owned by youngsters who ignore service intervals and poorly maintain their bikes as enthusiasts. Buy one with service history from a bloke with share in Putoline.

    I had a RS250 and loved it to bits, could be a bit niggly starting in the cold and wet but when it was running it screamed around the corners like it was on rails. Great brakes, superb handling and the package meant it could go around Donington Park with some of the big boys and show them up on the Infield. Bad points were two stroke oil costs and sometimes needed some coaxing to start in the cold. Apart from that an absolute screamer.

    My first road bike over 125 and I love it! Picked it up before I did my test off a bloke I know who had it from new, it had done 3k. Rode it/wobbled through last "summer" after passing my test with no problems what so ever. Although I do want a bigger bike I can't part with it, why? well how many ex-RS250 owners are glad they got rid? Loads of character, loads of fun!
